Тэрыторыя Інданезіі. Плошча 83,7 тыс. км². Насельніцтва каля 2 млн. чал. Асноўныя астравы — Хальмахера, Серам, Буру, Банда, Кай.
Раён Малукскіх астравоў адзін з найбольш актыўных раёнаў, дзе фарміруецца альпійская геасінклінальная вобласць Паўднёва-Усходняй Азіі. Астравы гарыстыя, пераважаюць вышыні ад 1000 да 2000 м (найбольшая — 3019 м, гара Біная). Каля 10 дзеючых вулканаў. Клімат экватарыяльны, на поўдні — субэкватарыяльны. Сярэднія тэмпературы ад 25 °С да 27 °С. Ападкаў ад 1500—2000 мм у нізінах, да 4000—5000 мм у гарах. Рачная сетка густая, рэкі паўнаводныя. Больш за 80 % тэрыторыі ўкрыта вечназялёнымі і лістападнымі трапічнымі лясамі. Вырошчваюць рыс, кукурузу, вострыя прыправы. Тут пашырана гваздзіковае дрэва.
